The ASEAN-Japan Centre organized an “Advanced Training on Japanese Language Skills for Tourism Professionals in Cambodia” in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap, Cambodia jointly with the Ministry of Tourism of Cambodia, on September 9, 11 and 12.
This training’s purpose is to provide an opportunity for Japanese speaking tourist guides and other tourism professionals in Cambodia to further improve their Japanese language skills and the communication skills, to obtain higher quality service towards Japanese visitors.
The training was organized in two cities in Cambodia; one day in Phnom Penh and two days in Siem Reap, and was attended by a total of 147 participants consisted of Japanese speaking tourist guides, travel agencies, hotel staffs and others. The programme included a lecture of “Recent Trend of Japanese Overseas Travels” to introduce the styles of Japanese travelers, and what they expect at the destinations, followed by the advanced Japanese language session to review the language they usually use in the daily work. The last session was on how to better communicate with Japanese travelers, as sometimes misunderstandings cause unexpected troubles due to cultural differences. The programme was concluded by reminding the participants that tourism service professionals have a great impact on the impression of the places to the travelers, and they serve the important role to bridge the travelers and the country often with different culture and customs.
The feedbacks from the participants showed that the training was useful to improve their language and communication in Japanese, and that they wish to have more trainings as such occasions are not often available to them.
This programme is registered as one of the Mekong-Japan Exchange Year events by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan.
