Circular Economy (CE) Capacity Building for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in ASEAN

Circular Economy (CE) is an inevitable trend for development in the nowadays context of increasing environmental pollution, resource depletion, climate changes, and biodiversity damages. ASEAN Japan Centre (AJC) commits to support the implementation of the “Framework for Circular Economy for the ASEAN Economic Community”, which was adopted at the 20th AEC Council Meeting in 2021.

Through research and consultation with experts, AJC found that Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) play a vital role in the Circular Transition in ASEAN. To their benefit, AJC will organize a series of online Workshops entitled “Circular Economy (CE) Capacity Building for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in ASEAN” from November 30th, 2022. These Workshops aims to:

•       Improve the knowledge about CE among MSMEs through review the approaches, policy development from different system
•    Develop the capacity to implement CE practices to participants business from some specific sectors by providing business analysis tools
•       Promote collaboration and investment among AMS, Japan through introducing good practices from the regions, and creating a network of alumni.


The workshops schedule is as follows:

Day 1:             Wednesday, 30th November 2022, 13:00-16:00 (GMT +7)

  • Overview of Circular Economy, Sustainable Business, Challenges and Opportunities faced by MSMEs in the Circular Transition (with the discussion of policy environment regarding CE)

Day 2:             Tuesday, 6th December 2022, 13:00-15:30 (GMT +7)

  • Applying Circular Transition in Agriculture & Cities: The Model, Tools and Good Practices

Day 3:             Tuesday, 13th December 2022, 13:00-15:30 (GMT +7)

  • Applying Circular Transition in Tourism: The Model, Tools and Good Practices

Day 4:             Wednesday, 21th December 2022, 13:00-15:45 (GMT +7)

  • Applying Circular Transition in Textile and Fashion: The Model, Tools and Good Practices

(Note: Follow-up Consultant Meeting with selected participants will be provided after the workshop .)

(Follow-up consultant services will be provided to businesses who commit to circular transition.)

AJC collaborates with the Institute for Circular Economy Development (ICED) to facilitate Online Workshops. ICED is a public science and technology research unit under the Vietnam National University of Ho Chi Minh City (VNU-HCM). As a core member of VNU-HCM, ICED contributes to scientific research and innovation, such as scientific-technological solutions and policies for developing a circular economy in Vietnam, by engaging on the foundation of an enterprise-government-university ecosystem. Its research focuses on practical solutions for CE and sustainable development. ICED has extensive experience with various projects with governments, private enterprises, and international organizations.

This project open to all participants from (but not limited to) MSMEs, officials in public institutes, NGOs, NPOs, and researchers who engage with and are interested in sustainability and circular economy development.
