ASEAN-Hiroshima Eco-School for Marine Plastic Waste(Pilot Programme)
ASEAN-Japan Centre (AJC) wishes to provide students from ASEAN countries and Hiroshima with a collaborative opportunity, in which they can share their basic knowledge and experiences regarding marine plastic waste, discuss and exchange their opinions for forward-looking solutions to solve the problem, and jointly deepen mutual understanding for the importance of tackling the marine plastic problem in a regional context as the ocean is connected.
AJC invites elementary schools and senior high schools in ASEAN Member States to join the symposium, which is going to be organized by AJC on February 2, 2022 as below. Kindly register from the link indicated below by February 2, 2022.
It is recommended that the students take the following Part 1 teaching session via online class or via e-Learning (*link to be prepared) before the symposium is held.

Background Information
About Our Future Leaders’ Declaration Programme in Fiscal Year 2020
Last fiscal year, at the request of the Japanese and ASEAN governments, the ASEAN-Japan Centre (“Centre”), as an international organization, launched a programme that specializes in the subject-matter of the marine plastic waste problem. This subject-matter has been treated as a societal and diplomatic priority such as at the G20 Meeting and the Japan-ASEAN Summit, and based on this background, the Centre developed the “Future Leaders’ Declaration on ASEAN-Japan Cooperation for International Marine Plastic Waste” for the purpose of empowering the ” future leaders” of Japan and ASEAN who are undergraduate and graduate students at Japanese universities and researching in the field of marine plastic waste. About the “ASEAN-Hiroshima Eco-School for Marine Plastic Waste Education (Pilot Programme) in Fiscal Year 2021
This fiscal year, the sequel programme to the previous fiscal year has been implemented. In this pilot programme, the “Future Leaders” who developed the above Declaration have taken action on their own to actually implement their perspectives on the following educational and awareness-raising activities and have worked towards problem-solving by servicing as lecturers of the online classes for elementary and senior high school students.
- Future Leaders aim to promote awareness-raising for children to embrace the importance of “continuity” in taking actions and making “saving the environment” a norm.
- Future Leaders aim to enhance the educational curriculum focused on environmental preservation.
- Future Leaders aim to bring about sustainable changes in the behavior of children relating to the marine plastic waste problem, so that the children become aware of their use of plastics on a daily basis and that waste separation and recycling become a part of their “habit”.
