22 Students Selected for ASEAN-Japan’s First Joint Project on Marine Plastic Waste

The ASEAN-Japan Centre (ASEAN-Japan Centre) launched on November 14, 2020, the ” Future Leaders’ Declaration on ASEAN-Japan Cooperation for International Marine Plastic Waste”. This project is the first attempt to adopt and present a student-initiated declaration on international marine plastic litter between Japan and 10 ASEAN member countries.

Twenty-two students representing Japan (Okayama, Shizuoka, Tokyo, Hiroshima, Mie, and Yamaguchi prefectures) and 10 ASEAN member countries (Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Viet Nam) were selected after a rigorous screening process from a total of approximately 60 applicants.

The 22 students have drafted a joint declaration through a series of three preparation sessions and special lectures and it will be presented in front of relevant ministries and agencies at the launch ceremony of the “Future Leaders’ Declaration on ASEAN-Japan Cooperation for Marine Plastic Waste” on March 16, 2021. (To join the event online, please see the following post: LAUNCH CEREMONY: Future Leaders’ Declaration on ASEAN-Japan Cooperation for International Marine Plastic Waste.)
